Know & Respond Wiltshire
Poor air quality can cause short-term health effects in people with heart or lung diseases, including asthma.
Know & Respond – is a free service for selected groups of individuals in the Wiltshire area. The service is provided for targeted individuals wishing to know about the quality of the air they breathe.
The service is based upon advice from COMEAP (The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants) on air quality.
It sends registered users a message if air quality in their area reaches the yellow band or above. The messages will give the public health advice as shown in the table below.
|Air Quality Band||Public Health Message (Based on COMEAP advice)|
|Green||Enjoy your usual outdoor activities.|
|Yellow||If you experience symptoms consider reducing strenuous physical activity, particularly outdoors.|
|Amber||Reduce strenuous physical activity, particularly outdoors. Keep reliever inhaler with you. Follow your doctor's usual advice about managing your condition.|
|Red||Avoid strenuous physical activity, particularly outdoors. Keep reliever inhaler with you. Follow your doctor's usual advice about managing your condition.|
How does it work?
The service is free. Anyone who is invited can sign up to receive public health advice messages via e-mail, text (SMS) to a mobile telephone or a recorded message to a landline. The system will automatically inform registered users when air quality reaches the yellow band or above (see the table above) and give timely health advice to enable you to make informed decisions and take any precautions necessary.
Further health advice to support the short text message is given on the Pollutants and health page.
